The Synaptic Method

What Are You Not Seeing?

Every unsolved problem contains a hidden contradiction: a place where two legitimate requirements conflict and everyone has stopped looking.

Overview

The Synaptic Method is a structured approach to locating that contradiction, exploring ways to resolve it, and identifying what becomes possible once the conflict is made visible. It applies six independent lenses to the same problem, then looks for the useful signals that emerge where those lenses converge.

It is the working framework behind every engagement on this site — a method for conceptual problem-solving, research, and early-stage design exploration. It does not replace testing, domain-specific expertise, or qualified professional review where those are required.

The method is documented in a book by V Hallock. It is described further down this page.

The Six Lenses

Six independent perspectives applied to the same problem at the same time. Numbered for reference, not ordered by rank or sequence.

01

TRIZ

Systematic innovation derived from patent analysis. This lens seeks the contradiction at the root of a problem and explores ways to resolve it without merely accepting a trade-off.

02

Biomimicry

Nature has had billions of years to solve constraints involving structure, energy, materials, movement, resilience, and organization. Find the analogue, then determine whether its underlying principle can transfer.

03

Da Vinci’s Eye

Observe what others overlook. The gap between what is assumed and what is actually present is often where a useful solution begins.

04

Lost Technology

Some ideas worked, were forgotten, or were abandoned before materials, manufacturing, or adjacent technologies could support them. This lens searches history for what was left behind—not simply what failed.

05

Future Technology

Design toward what is becoming feasible, not only toward what exists today. The space between current capability and near-future capability can reveal useful directions for research and concept development.

06

Synaptic Synthesis

Where the other lenses converge is where the deeper opportunity may be. Synthesis is not compromise; it is the emergent answer that no single lens could produce alone.

The Process

What actually happens during a Concept Review or a Sprint, in order.

Define the actual problem.

What must change, work, move, survive, communicate, or become easier? Many proposed solutions address the wrong problem, an inherited assumption, or a poorly defined constraint.

Map the environment and the user.

Who uses it, where does it operate, and what real conditions decide whether it succeeds?

Identify the contradiction.

Determine which two legitimate needs, conditions, or goals are fighting each other.

Run all six lenses in parallel.

They are independent perspectives, not a rigid sequence.

Find the convergence point.

Look for directions supported by multiple lenses rather than relying on one attractive idea.

Test against real constraints.

A concept must survive practical questions of materials, cost, use, maintenance, risk, manufacturability, and appropriate evaluation—not merely sound clever.

Deliver the next real object.

A concept architecture that can be researched, prototyped, engineered, tested, funded, handed off, or deliberately shelved — with the reasoning written down.

The Book

The Synaptic Method

The Synaptic Method, What are you not seeing and How to find it, by V Hallock, documents the underlying approach behind this practice: finding the functions, constraints, assumptions, contradictions, and overlooked connections that determine whether a concept becomes buildable.

It is the reasoning written down. The consulting work is that reasoning applied to your problem, on a schedule, with a deliverable at the end. Reading it is not a prerequisite for either.

Core Principles

No Joule Left Behind

Every system loses something: heat, motion, time, information, attention, material, or energy. Before writing the loss off as unavoidable, ask what else it could do.

Rigor Is the Wand

Creativity without discipline produces interesting failures. The method requires both imagination and constraint.

Labels Hide Patterns

The name of a thing is not the thing itself. Strip away the label and examine what it actually does.

Convergence Beats Confidence

One smart opinion is weak evidence. Multiple independent lenses pointing in the same direction are a signal worth examining.

“The answer was always there. You just needed a different set of eyes.”

Limitations

Limitations. V Hallock is not a licensed professional engineer, and Mechanicus Magus Consulting is not an engineering firm. The practice does not offer professional engineering services, stamped or sealed drawings, code or regulatory compliance work, certification, safety validation, or construction-ready or production-release designs. It does not provide legal advice or patent legal opinion.

Work delivered here is conceptual and exploratory: framing, analysis, documentation, concept architecture, and physical prototypes intended to inform a decision. Anything moving toward built, sold, or safety-critical use should be reviewed and approved by a licensed professional engineer or other qualified specialist.
